Georgia and a couple of other states are participating in the second annual Operation Southern Shield, which is a speeding enforcement operation that lasts from July 16th to July 22nd. GA State Patrol, as well as law enforcement officials in South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida, will crack down on drivers speeding above the limits.
From Monday, July 16th to Sunday, July 22nd, there will be no more warnings for GA drivers speeding over the limit!
Remember, even in places where you do not know the limit or do not see a marked speed sign, you can still get a fine for speeding.
Keep the general GA speed limits in mind wherever you are driving.
SPEED LIMITS
Interstates in Rural Areas: 70 mph
Interstates in Urban Areas / Multi-Lane Divided Highways: 65 mph
State Roads / Other Roads: 55 mph
Urban or Residential District: 30 mph
Unpaved County Road: 35 mph
The Georgia vehicle code state:
“No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards than existing.”
SPEEDING FINES
First time offender?
You could get fined between $25-$500 depending on your county and the number of points on your license.
You could have your license suspended for 1-5 years.
You can get fined between $100 to $2,000 in a construction zone, and sentenced to up to one year of jail time.
Multiple offenses?
You could get increased fines and even more points off your license (around 2-6). For example, someone with 15 points off their license within 1 year will be suspended.
If you get a Super Speeder Violation, which is driving 75 mph or more on a two-lane road or 85 mph or more on any state road or highway, then you will have to pay $200 along with whatever the ticket fine is and you’ll have to go to court.
OPERATION SOUTHERN SHIELD
This is the second year these states have enacted Operation Southern Shield. The speeding enforcement operation does not just focus on speeding, but also distracted, aggressive or reckless driving, failure to wear a seatbelt and driving under the influence.
The GA State Patrol will be focusing on the interstate and residential streets. If you’re on your phone, distracted, have any expired tags, or any other moving violations, you are likely to get pulled over.
Remember, even if it is 5 miles over the speed limit, troopers will still pull you over so slow down and drive safe!
